Oral history interview with Neal R. Amundson, 1995 June 1.

After he briefly describes his education in chemistry and mathematics in the 1940s, Amundson discusses his leadership of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He describes his decision to hire non-traditional chemical engineering theoreticians since the department had little research funding. In this context, he relates the circumstances under which Rutherford Aris joined the department. Amundson outlines the rivalry between the two mathematics departments on campus and discusses his role in combining them in the early 1960s. He briefly describes the Dept. of Chemical Engineering's extensive use of the campus computing equipment--the REAC, IBM 602A, UNIVAC 1103, and CDC 1604--and elaborates on his role in procuring and scheduling use of the equipment. Amundson concludes with a brief summary of the department's achievements under his leadership. Green and Aronson make occasional comments on the Dept. of Chemical Engineering during the course of the interview.
